The year began badly: a 2-6, 3-6 loss to Aliaksandra Sasnovich in Brisbane and a retirement after one set against Ajla Tomljanovic in Adelaide. At the Australian Open she beat Dalma Galfi and Polina Kudermetova before losing a tight third-round match to Victoria Mboko, 6-7(5), 7-5, 3-6.

February was her best month. She reached the semi-finals in Abu Dhabi, losing to Sara Bejlek 5-7, 6-3, 5-7, and then won three matches in Dubai – against Sofia Kenin, Peyton Stearns and Magda Linette – before world No. 5 Jessica Pegula beat her in the quarter-finals.

From March her back took over. She retired in Miami against Katie Boulter and in Rome against Oleksandra Oliynykova, and on 22 May she told TV 2 that she has two herniated discs. More than 100 days passed without a win until Bad Homburg on 22 June, where she beat Diana Shnaider 6-4, 6-4 and Qinwen Zheng before losing to Karolína Muchová. Later highlights were the semi-finals in Athens and the quarter-finals in Monterrey; the season ended with a calf injury in Wuhan.

The summer and autumn brought few wins. After the Wimbledon loss to Maria Sakkari she won three matches in Athens – against Nao Hibino, Miriana Tona and Sara Bejlek – before Barbora Krejčíková beat her 1-6, 6-4, 3-6 in the semi-finals. Washington ended with two lost tie-breaks against Elisabetta Cocciaretto, Toronto with a straight-sets loss to Nikola Bartůňková, and in Cincinnati she beat Peyton Stearns before losing to Linda Nosková. In Monterrey she beat Renata Zarazúa and Ekaterina Alexandrova and lost the quarter-final to Diane Parry. The US Open, Beijing and Wuhan brought three straight defeats.
