Clara Tauson's Australian Open final: the 2019 junior title

Melbourne is where the wider tennis world first took notice of Clara Tauson. In January 2019 she played the girls' singles final against Canada's Leylah Annie Fernandez and won 6-4, 6-3, becoming the first Danish girl to win the Australian Open junior title.

The title took her to No. 1 in the junior world rankings, also a first for a Danish girl. She had already shown her talent: Danish women's champion at 13 in 2016 – the youngest ever – and gold at the European Youth Olympic Festival in 2017. In August 2019 she gave up junior tennis to focus on the senior tour.

The two 2019 finalists have since met on the WTA Tour, and their senior head-to-head stands at 1-1. All of her rivalries are on the page Clara Tauson head-to-head.

In Melbourne she beat Linda Nosková 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 and Tatjana Maria 6-2, 6-2, before losing a close third-round match 6-7(5), 4-6 to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. In Melbourne she practised with Italy's Jasmine Paolini, with her boyfriend Kasper Elsvad as coach. In the tournament she beat Dalma Galfi 6-3, 6-3 and Polina Kudermetova 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
